Barcelona’s poor away record in La Liga: a portent of another UCL exit?

Barça have their worst start in away games in a decade

Barcelona have been undone by terrible UEFA Champions League away performances in the past few years, a problem that can easily be described as the team’s biggest weakness.

While almost every team across all sports is better at home than away, the Catalans have been particularly fallible away from the Camp Nou. And this season, it seems like the problem has only gotten worse.

Barcelona have had their worst start in La Liga in terms of away matches in over a decade. With only seven points out of a possible 18 away from home, Barcelona are now worse off than in any other season since the 2007-2008 term with Frank Rijkaard at the helm. They would finish second that season.

In addition, with three losses in six games, Barcelona have had their worst run of away losses to start a league campaign since 2002-2003 under Louis van Gaal. In that season, Barcelona lost four of their opening six away matches. The Dutch coach was sacked and Barcelona ended the campaign in sixth place under an interim manager.

If Barcelona’s bad form away from home continues, it signals another Champions League exit. Without at least passable results away from home, it will be incredibly hard to win the competition.
