Juan Carlos Heredia says the River Plate coach has to avoid Tata Martino’s mistakes

A former Barcelona and River Plate player has spoken out about the rumors linking current River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo to the Barça job.

Juan Carlos Heredia, also known as Milonguita, was a player for Barcelona in the 70s and River Plate in the 80s, among other teams.

“I believe that Gallardo would fit at Barcelona, so long as he does not want to do what Tata Martino did. Because I was there when Martino was in charge of Barcelona, and the football that Barcelona plays is the one we played alongside Johan Cruyff,” Heredia told Argentine outlet Súper Deportivo.

Heredia coincided with Cruyff’s time at Barcelona in the 70s. Meanwhile, Martino was the last Argentine coach Barcelona had. He was considered a disappointment and left after only one season.

“So, when it was Tata Martino, he wanted to play another type of football, and it seems, created a mess and didn’t last long. But if Gallardo proceeds with the manner he has of leading, and respects Barcelona’s football, and adds his stamp, I have no doubts that he will triumph,” he continued.

“Gallardo has to win, that boy is a born winner. Surely to get into Barcelona he has to change something of himself to adapt and get used to the football that Barcelona plays. He will avoid a mistake by not repeating what Tata did.”
