Lionel Messi: I was bothered when Ronaldo equalled my Ballon d’Or record
The Argentine is relieved to be ahead once again
Lionel Messi has revealed that he was displeased by the fact Cristiano Ronaldo equalled his Ballon d’Or record two years ago when the Portuguese won his fifth.
In an interview with France Football, which gives the award, Messi admitted he was annoyed by it.
“When he equalled me, it bothered me a little,” Messi said.
Now the Barcelona ace has surely put that feeling behind him, winning his sixth Ballon d’Or and once again placing himself ahead of Ronaldo. Some say it’s confirmation the Argentine is the best ever.
“Honestly, I don’t know who the best in history is,” he said.
His illustrious career could be winding down, but Messi is optimistic.
“Knowing that there is always another game keeps me going. Frankly, I don’t feel the weight of my 32 years. I will keep going until I feel like I can’t keep on, that my body doesn’t allow me to continue. It’s difficult to give a date. The more time, the better. I don’t think about the future, I have always been like that,” he said, noting he is not necessarily targeting FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
