The club need to ‘start from scratch’

Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has warned the club are heading for a ‘perfect storm’ following another chaotic week at the Camp Nou.

Six directors have resigned in protest at the way the club is being run. One of them, Emili Rousand, subsequently said he thinks “someone has had their hand in the till.”

His comments brought an angry response from Barcelona. The club denied any claims of corruption and threatened legal action in an official statement.

Font has now had his say in an open letter where he’s made his feelings quite clear.

“For some time now the project Sí al futur (Yes to the Future, in Catalan) has been warning Barça members that the Club was heading towards the “perfect storm” – it had to replace the best generation of footballers in history, build and finance the Espai Barça development project and compete against corporations with almost unlimited financial resources. And all this had to be done while preserving the ownership of the Club in the hands of the members and its competitive capacity both in football and in all sections.”

Font also spoke about the recent “shameful” behaviour, said the club were facing “gigantic” risks and made the following three demands to the board of directors.

“Explain in a totally transparent way the economic situation and the total debt of the Club and to what extent this debt limits the short-term action plan.

“Delay making any structural decisions that are not essential, since we do not know for sure what the impact of the coronavirus will be on the life and economy of the Club. It is vital to postpone the decision on the Espai Barça project until the new Board of Directors is elected.

“Offer the maximum prudence and transparency when carrying out operations (investments and sales) involving players.”
