The Dutchman is being backed for Camp Nou success

Frenkie de Jong has adapted well to life at Barcelona and will be a “great successor” to Sergio Busquets at the Camp Nou, according to Ronald de Boer.

The Dutch midfielder joined from Ajax in the summer and has become a regular for Barca, featuring 37 times in all competitions for his new club.

De Jong hasn’t perhaps consistently hit the heights that he did with Ajax last summer, but De Boer is backing him to go on and have a big future with the Catalans.

“People said he didn’t reach the level he reached with Ajax last season in Europe or with the national team,” he said.

“But not everyone can say that they play so many minutes with such a strong team, so I think he’s doing well.

“If he’s going to play as a central midfielder, I’m sure he’ll be successful. He is a controller, you should not ask him to score 20 goals, he is not such a player. I am sure he will be a great successor to Busquets in the future.”

De Jong has been pretty honest in his assessment of his time at Barca so far this season. He said back in January that he thinks he could do better and would give his performances “a six or a six and a half” out of 10.
