Piqué after meeting Shakira before the World Cup: “we will see each other in the final”
A confident Piqué assured the singer she would see him when he sang in the final match
Gerard Piqué has revealed that he confidently assured Shakira they would see each other in the FIFA World Cup final when they first met, before the tournament began.
The Barcelona and Spain defender knew Shakira would be singing during the match. The Colombian pop star performed the tournament’s official song, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” at the closing ceremony. What was not known at the time, obviously, was that Spain would be not only playing the final, but defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in it.
“I took it for granted that we would play that match,” the defender said in a new interview.
He recalled meeting Shakira in Madrid and establishing a connection early, calling himself “brave” in their interaction.
“There was chemistry from the beginning,” he admitted.
Spain started off the tournament by losing 1-0 to Switzerland, but they soon rebounded. Piqué injured himself in the match, but looked back on it with a smile: “I broke my face for Spain. Long live the king!”
The 2010 Spain team was mainly made up of current, future, and former FC Barcelona players, but Piqué said it would be “unfair” to ignore the contributions of the likes of Iker Casillas or Sergio Ramos.
“It’s true that we were the majority, that Xavi had a lot of influence in the game, but I always thought that we had everything. Lots of quality and variety,” he said.
The 2010 World Cup in South Africa will always hold a special place in Piqué’s heart as he solidified his connection with Shakira and won football’s most prestigious tournament.
“I won the biggest title one can get and met the love of my life. I left South Africa as a different person and had an unforgettable experience,” he said.
