The striker played a key role in the win

Martin Braithwaite was a bit of a surprise name on the Barcelona teamsheet on Wednesday but came up with the goods, picking up two assists as the hosts ran out 3-0 winners against Elche.

The Dane produced a lovely flick to tee up Lionel Messi for the opening goal and also set up Jordi Alba to make it 3-0 before being replaced by Antoine Griezmann late on.

Braithwaite admitted after the game he’s not sure if he’s ever managed two assists in a game before but was happy to have contributed to the win.

“The change we had in the second half is important. It has not been easy but we have all worked. I don’t know if I had ever given two assists in a game. I always try to accompany Leo and I am happy to have helped him today. The victory was needed today.”

Ronald Koeman swapped Miralem Pjanic for Ousmane Dembele at half-time after a pedestrian first half and was rewarded as the team ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Griezmann started the game on the bench but came on for the last 15 minutes and should have scored but missed a couple of good opportunities.

The Frenchman still looks likely to start against Sevilla on Saturday, although Braithwaite may just have played himself into contention with his performance.
