Koeman praises Barca’s mentality after Betis win
The Catalan giants ran out 3-2 winners
Ronald Koeman praised his team’s mentality after Barcelona once again recovered from going a goal down to win 3-2 against Real Betis in La Liga on Sunday.
The visitors went behind to a Borja Iglesias goal but hit back through substitute Lionel Messi and a Victor Ruiz own goal.
Ruiz then levelled for Betis to make it 2-2 before Francisco Trincao curled home a wonderful winner for Koeman’s men that left the Barca boss more than satisfied.
“The results have helped us to believe and the team has used their mentality to win this game. This is the way,” he said.
“He [Trincao] is young, he has to adapt to the level of a big club like Barcelona. We’ve been giving him minutes.
“In the last few games, he’s had bad luck missing chances. Today he was decisive and that’s important for him and for us.”
Koeman also spoke about his decision to bring on Frenkie de Jong early on as a substitute for Ronald Araujo who suffered an ankle injury and was forced off.
Defenders Samuel Umtiti and Sergino Dest were also available, but Koeman opted to go with the Netherlands international instead.
“I like to have a right-footer and a left-footer as a pair of central defenders and Dest had discomfort yesterday and wasn’t ready to play so long, so we went for Frenkie,” he said.
Barca must wait and see how serious Araujo’s injury is. The club have confirmed he has suffered an ankle sprain but will undergo further tests to see just how serious it is.
