Ter Stegen: Mentality was key to Copa del Rey comeback
The goalkeeper saved a penalty in the win
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen said the team’s mentality was key to Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Sevilla that sent the Catalans into the Copa del Rey final.
Ronald Koeman’s side needed a stoppage-time equalizer from Gerard Pique to force extra-time and then won the tie through Martin Braithwaite’s goal in an eventful match.
Ter Stegen was also called upon to save a penalty from Lucas Ocampos in the second half, and he also admitted afterwards that it would probably have been curtains for Barca if Sevilla had scored.
“It was a very special game and the mentality has been key to turning the tie around. We knew we had to be patient, but also intense and we succeeded. We want to win titles,” he said.
“This victory was very necessary, it helps us to push forward. It was one of our objectives, so we are very happy to reach the final.
“in the penalty there was the tie. If they had scored us, it would have been very difficult to turn it around, we deserved to overcome the tie. Penalties are a lottery, but I always try to help the team.
