Barça haven’t won a Cup Final in Seville in 96 years
Barça play the Copa del Rey Final in a city where they haven’t enjoyed success in nearly a century
The Copa del Rey Final is fast approaching and Barcelona will face Athletic Bilbao on Saturday looking for their first trophy of the season. But in order to do that, they’ll have to do something that literally happens once every century: winning a title in the city of Seville.
Mundo Deportivo has an excellent article about the last time Barça won a Cup Final in that city: it was the 1925 Copa del Rey Final, known at the time as the Spanish Championship. It was a 2-0 win against Arenas de Getxo at the Estadio Reina Victoria, and this was Barça’s lineup that day: Plattko; Planas, Walter; Torralba, Sancho, Carulla; Piera, Arnau, Samitier, Alcántara, Sagi Barba. Ah, the 2-3-5.
Since that day, 96 long years ago, Barça played three finals in Seville: the first was the 1986 European Cup Final in which Steaua Bucharest shocked the world and beat Barça in a memorable penalty shootout. In 2019, Valencia — led by current Athletic manager Marcelino García Toral — beat the Blaugrana in the Copa del Rey decider thanks to a 2-1 victory against Ernesto Valverde’s men.
Last January in the Spanish Supercup, Athletic defeated Barça 3-2 in extra time despite the Catalans having a 2-1 lead until the 89th minute, but Iñaki Williams scored in overtime to give Bilbao the title.
It’s time to end the Seville jinx.
