The defender is expected to stay until 2023

Óscar Mingueza has enjoyed a breakout season with the Barcelona first team and his performances will be rewarded with a contract extension until 2023, according to a report from Diario SPORT.

Barça had until the end of May to activate an automatic extension clause in the defender’s deal, but director of football Mateu Alemany has already met with the player’s agent to inform him of the club’s intention to trigger the clause. Now all Alemany and Mingueza’s representative need is to agree on a few minor details, which should likely include Óscar’s official promotion to the first team for next season.

Mingueza has become a key part of Ronald Koeman’s team over the last few months and scored in Barça’s defeat in El Clásico last weekend. The 21-year-old made his debut against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League group stage, and took advantage of all the injuries in the backline to show his versatility as a central defender and full-back.

Barça are expected to sign Eric García from Manchester City on a free this summer but that won’t mean the end of the road for Mingueza. The youngster’s staying at the club for at least two more years.
