The defender’s knee is still causing problems

Gerard Pique’s chances of being fit in time for El Clasico on Saturday are not looking good with the defender reportedly still struggling with a knee problem.

The defender has been back in training over the last week but is yet to complete a full session with the team after suffering a bit of a setback.

Pique trained separately on Tuesday and must now wait until Thursday to see if there’s any chance he will be able to make the game, according to multiple reports in Spain.

The 34-year-old’s chances of playing are currently described as “very complicated” and it seems highly unlikely Ronald Koeman will take any risks with the center-back.

If Pique does miss out then he may have to wait until the Copa del Rey final against Athletic on April 17 to make his comeback.

Koeman does have options if Pique isn’t available and could hand Ronald Araujo a start in central defense. The Uruguayan came on as a second-half sub against Real Valladolid on Monday.

Real Madrid also have defensive problems for Saturday’s big match. Captain Sergio Ramos is out with a thigh injury and Raphael Varane is also sidelined currently after testing positive for Covid-19.
