The Catalan giants have shrugged off a poor start to fight for the title

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has been talking about his team’s turnaround in form which has seen Ronald Koeman’s side cut the gap to leaders Atletico Madrid to just one point.

The Catalan giants had a tough start to the season and were 10 points behind Atletico at the start of the year. However, a 19-match unbeaten run in La Liga has brought the title back into view.

Araujo explains how an underwhelming start to the campaign helped bring the players closer together to try and find a way forward.

“The team is very good, the group is very good. When there were bad results we knew that together we could sort it out: there is a team, a group and excellent players. We got together more, we had talks with the leaders, the captains. We knew that if we were united, the results would come. The team is doing very well. We need to be together like this for what is to come, which is very important.”

The Uruguay international also took time out to speak about captain Lionel Messi and how he’s hoping the Argentine will stay at the club past the end of the season when his contract expires.

“When Suárez left, I took his old locker in the dressing room, next to Messi. He is an excellent person, a great captain and a benchmark. I hope he stays with us much longer. Messi is Barça, he has been with many years here, he is the captain and reference, an idol for many. The truth is that it is difficult to see him with another shirt. I believe and I want him to stay with us.”

Araujo could be set to make his first start since returning from injury at the weekend against Real Madrid in El Clasico. The Uruguayan could take over from Frenkie de Jong in defense, allowing the Dutchman to return to his preferred midfield spot.
