The Barcelona president is not satisfied with how the season turned out

“A cycle has ended, we are entering a process of renewal,” those were the words of Joan Laporta at the Festa de L’Esport Català gala.

Laporta was elected as club president for the second time last March. This came after Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned in disgrace last year.

He was there to pick up an award on behalf of the club’s women’s section.

“The award is a recognition of the great work that has been done, and is being done, with women’s football, which is a point of pride for all Catalans,” he said.

Barcelona’s women’s team is on their way to winning the treble after winning the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history.

He was less enthusiastic when speaking about the men’s team.

“I said that at the end of the season we would make evaluations based on the results and how we are playing. We have won the cup, we are very proud, but they have eliminated us very soon from the Champions League and we have lost the league in an incomprehensible way,” he said.

“Starting next week, decisions will be made to build a more competitive team next year in order to win the Champions League and La Liga. When I talk about the end of this cycle and a renewal, it is because I think that is the right thing to do.”

Barcelona won the Copa del Rey this season but an early exit in the Champions League and a poor ending to La Liga have soured what could have been a unanimously successful season.
