Ivan Rakitic was on target for the visitors

The title race in Spain took yet another twist on Sunday night as Real Madrid dropped points at home to Sevilla in a 2-2 draw.

Los Blancos would have knocked Atletico off the top with a win at Valdebebas but instead needed a fortunate stoppage-time strike just to grab a point.

Fernando opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first half but Sevilla were pegged back after the break when Marco Asensio equalized for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

A wild sequence of events then saw Karim Benzema brought down in the area by goalkeeper Bono, only for a VAR check to award Sevilla a penalty at the other end for a handball by Eder Militao moments previously.

Former Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic slotted home the spot-kick to make it 2-1 on 78 minutes and offer Sevilla hope of a precious win.

Julen Lopetegui’s side managed to hold on in normal time but then faced an extra six minutes of stoppage time and were undone when Toni Kroos’s strike took a wicked deflection and beat Bono.

The result means Atletico stay top on 77 points and remain two clear of Real Madrid and Barcelona with now just three games left to play.
