The coach’s future remains uncertain

Ronald Koeman’s future as Barcelona boss looks increasingly uncertain but the Catalan giants reportedly won’t sack the Dutchman “without having a successor in place.”

President Joan Laporta is already looking for replacements ahead of Barcelona’s final game of the season and could make a change in the summer, according to ESPN.

While it looks likely currently that Koeman will depart in the coming weeks, there’s still a chance he could see out his two-year deal “if none of the alternatives convince.”

Xavi looks once again to be the favorite but the report claims not all of the Barcelona board are convinced, while the former midfielder is also in no rush to return right now.

The 41-year-old flew back into Barcelona on Monday but insisted when he was met by reporters that he’s in the city strictly for pleasure and not business. He said only, “I don’t know anything, I’m coming here for vacation.”

There don’t seem too many credible alternatives to Xavi either. ESPN report Laporta’s a fan of Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann and Jurgen Klopp but none of the trio look realistic options.

Xavi is described as the “most logical” candidate but has just signed a contract extension with Al Sadd and may feel it’s still not the right time to come back and take on his dream job.
