Les Bleus had enough chances to win but dropped two points

In front of a raucous home crowd in Budapest, Hungary produced the first big surprise of Euro 2020 as they held France to a 1-1 draw in their second group stage match, with Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann on target for the French and Ousmane Dembélé injured after a 30-minute substitute appearance.

The home team had already played an excellent match in their opener against Portugual despite a 3-0 loss, and they once again showed great resilience for the entire 90 minutes against Les Bleus.

The Hungarians knew they weren’t as talented as the French but could equalize things with great effort and heart, and that’s exactly what they did. France created plenty of chances to score in the first half but Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappé were wasteful in front of goal, and Fiola made them pay for it, putting the home team ahead with their only chance of the game.

France had 45 minutes to turn the result around and certainly attacked a lot in the second half, with Dembélé hitting the post with his first touch as a substitute one of many chances for the away side.

But they could only find the net once thanks to an alert Griezmann who was the quickest to the ball after a poor clearance by Orban.

The final minutes were all about Hungary trying to hold on to the result as France brought the pressure, and Varane missed a header in the final chance of the game.

The two points dropped aren’t the end of the world for France who still look in a good position to qualify, but they were massive favorites to win this one and weren’t clynical enough to do it.
