The captain will sign for five seasons

Lionel Messi’s contract extension at Barcelona could be finally announced shortly, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.

L’Esportiu report that Messi has agreed a five-year deal and a “significant” pay cut. The deal could be announced as early as Thursday or Friday “if there are no last-minute setbacks.”

The report adds there’s a termination clause set at €600 million and La Liga president Javier Tebas has already had a look at the deal and seems pretty happy with it.

Diario Sport have a similar report, although they state a release clause of €350m, but also reckon it will be a five-year deal.

Interestingly, the report adds that Messi is thinking about seeing out the deal at Barca, rather than heading to MLS in two years as has previously been reported.

The captain is said to “see himself with strength and energy” to keep playing at the highest level for another five years and the club is of the same opinion.

Sport also report that Messi has taken a 50% pay cut and feels he needs to set an example amid the club’s financial crisis as he’s the captain.
