Rubiales wants to make big changes to La Liga
The RFEF president wants to revamp the Spanish top flight
Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation, says he wants to see some big changes made to La Liga and will talk to Javier Tebas about his ideas.
The 43-year-old wants to have “fewer matchdays” and “bigger spectacles” and also wants games played at “neutral venues.”
Rubiales also mentioned the possibility of playing games in Miami again, something he was previously against when there were plans for a Barcelona vs Girona game in the US, and says it’s something that could be discussed.
Here’s what he’s had to say:
“In the next few days I’m going to ask Javier Tebas to sit down with me to try and change the format of La Liga. We’ve changed the format of many competitions and the results are there for everyone to see.
“We have to propose having fewer matchdays and bigger spectacles. We have to try and capture the attention of more young people by making it more exciting. La Liga has been inflexible. If we want to change the format we have to do it unanimously.
“We’re going to propose La Liga games in neutral venues. There will be fewer match days but we will generate more money. We could look at hosting a game in Miami. It’s not viable now because teams play home and away but we could look into it.”

It’s worth noting that Rubiales and the RFEF have revamped the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey recently. The Supercopa has moved to a ‘final four’ tournament and takes place outside of Spain in January.
Meanwhile, changes to the Copa del Rey mean games are now played as single-leg ties with the lower-ranked opponents playing at home until the semi-final stages.
