Barca continue talks with Busquets, Piqué & Alba - report
The club needs to reduce the wage bill quickly
Barcelona are still in talks with Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba as the club tries desperately to reduce the wage bill ahead of the start of the new La Liga season.
The Catalan giants are hoping the trio will agree to salary reductions that would help the club register their new signings in time for Sunday’s opener against Real Sociedad.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the club “continues to believe” that Ronald Koeman will be able to have the players available for the match.
The report also states that Barca had set today as their deadline. Players can be registered until Sunday but sales or pay-cuts have to be agreed first.
Barca are concentrating on the trio but work still needs to be done. Busquets is reportedly not quite convinced by the proposals because he’s already agreed to several cuts already.
MD seem most optimistic about Pique. The defender “understands the situation of the club” and is willing to defer payments and accept reductions but nothing has been finalized yet.
There’s no word on Alba’s position, while the report adds that there are no talks with Sergi Roberto because he’s into the final year of his deal and charges the least of the four captains.
It’s still not clear what will happen and whether players such as Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Emerson will be available for Sunday. The message from the club seems to be one of “optimism” that something can be done in time but we heard that before with Messi.
