The two midfielders will be out for a while

Although the Barcelona news are dominated by Lionel Messi right now, there’s some important information coming out of the Germany training camp as Frenkie De Jong and Gavi will be sidelined for a few weeks due to injury, the club announced on Thursday.

“Frenkie De Jong has pulled the inner gastrocnemius muscle in his right leg and is hence unavailable until he recovers from the injury.

Meanwhile, Gavi has fractured his right jaw and is also side-lined.”

The nature of the De Jong injury sounds a lot more complicated than what it actually is, which is a calf pull. Early reports suggest De Jong will miss around a week, which would keep him out of the Joan Gamper Trophy against Juventus on Sunday and call into question his status for the La Liga opener against Real Sociedad on August 15th.

17-year-old Gavi, one of the most impressive young players in preseason, is exptected to miss around four weeks with a broken jaw. Gavi will be hoping for a promotion from the U19s to Barça B this season, but the injury could make that difficult.
