A few interesting numbers to look at

Barcelona confirmed the squad numbers for the first team presentation at the 2021 Joan Gamper Trophy against Juventus on Sunday.

While these aren’t the definitive numbers for the 2021-22 season, it’s unlikely that we’ll see too much change from that list. And there’ some interesting takeaways.

The big one is Riqui Puig taking over the No. 6 shirt after wearing No. 12 last season. The number 6 is an iconic one at Barça and Puig, polarizing as he seems to be these days, has the honor of wearing Xavi’s number and will hope to become the next great small Barça midfielder.

The next big question is who takes over the No. 10 shirt with Lionel Messi’s departure, and there are a few candidates: Sergio Agüero is the obvious one even though he takes number 19 for the Gamper, but Philippe Coutinho and Memphis Depay might also get in the running for the most iconic jersey in the sport based on their previous stops.

Ansu Fati upgrades from 22 to 17, and Emerson Royal gets to wear his Real Betis number at Barça. Eric García doesn’t have a number yet, and Martin Braithwaite loses No. 9 to Memphis.

The official squad numbers will be announced next week before the start of the La Liga season.
