Manchester City might be out of the running

Chelsea are joining Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign Lionel Messi, according to reports in Spanish media. FC Barcelona said they would not be able to re-sign the Argentine star yesterday in a shock announcement.

Manchester City was Messi’s preferred destination last season when he tried to leave but ultimately could not, but they are reportedly out of the running this time having made investments elsewhere.

Seeing an opening, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is making a play to land the world’s best player on a free transfer.

The UEFA Champions League winners are negotiating with Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku, and they will have their calculators out trying to see if they can sign both of them, or only one.

Chelsea are flush with cash and looking to make a purchase, which is not the case for City, who have paid 100 million pounds to sign Jack Grealish.

PSG, however, are the frontrunners.

Abramovich is looking for a meeting with Messi in order to change that, and lure him to the Premier League.

Barcelona are still thought to be in the running, despite it all, to retain Messi. Inter Miami has also been mentioned as a possible destination in betting markets. However, as of now, Paris is said to be the likeliest.
