The midfielder is optimistic about Barça’s chances ahead of the new season

Frenkie De Jong is an optimist. The Barcelona midfielder is getting ready to start his third season in a Blaugrana jersey and is yet to experience winning La Liga or going far in the Champions League, but he’s confident that the chances are good this year.

De Jong will be a crucial piece of whatever Barça accomplish this season but he needs a strong team around him, and he seems excited about how the squad looks after his preseason debut against Stuttgart this weekend.

This will also be the second season under Ronald Koeman. Whether or not that’s a good thing is clearly up for debate, but De Jong thinks that a second year under the same system will be of benefit to the team. Frenkie thinks this Barça team is good enough to compete, and that fans should be optimistic about their chances in 2021-22.

“We have improved this season in respect to the previous campaign. We’re growing as a team. The atmosphere is very good and there’s a lot of quality. The youngsters coming in are very strong and have a lot of talent. I see a strong squad capable of fighting for everything.

“It’s always said that things improve in the second year of a coach. In the second year, we all know each other better and the adaption is quicker. We’re clear that we’re going to have opportunities to fight and win important trophies. We’re desperate to fight for everything.”
