The midfielder may have to wait to have a rest

Pedri has only just jetted back into Barcelona after winning silver with Spain at the Tokyo Olympics but is expected to play some part of the Catalans’ La Liga opener on Sunday against Real Sociedad.

The teenager played an eye-watering 73 games last season for club and country but will be thrust back into action at the Camp Nou, according to both Sport and Mundo Deportivo.

Injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Gavi, and Ilaix Moriba’s contract standoff, mean Ronald Koeman is short of midfielders for Sunday’s match which means Pedri could start or be used off the bench. Pedri is said to be happy to do whatever is asked of him.

The reports reckon that Pedri may finally get a rest over the next international break in September. Barca could ask Luis Enrique not to call up the young star for World Cup qualifiers against Sweden, Kosovo, and Georgia so he can rest.

Pedri is expected back in training on Thursday for the first time since the Olympics, while it’s not clear yet when De Jong will be fit to return. The Netherlands international suffered a calf strain in pre-season, while Gavi fractured his jaw.
