‘It has hurt us and it hurt him too’

Gerard Pique was happy to share his thoughts about Barcelona after Sunday’s 3-0 win over Juventus in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Barca secured an impressive win on a tough day for the club after Lionel Messi’s departure earlier in the day at an emotional press conference.

Pique admitted Messi’s exit had left the team “a bit broken” but knows the club must now move forward without the GOAT.

“The team was honestly a bit broken because of Messi’s departure, we will lose magic in attack, but we have to move forward, the fans expect a lot from us,” he said.

“We lose the best player of all time. It has hurt us and it hurt him too. I don’t know the whole story, the two parties have said that it has been a matter of numbers... The management of the last years hasn’t helped, but history shows that we will get up.

“People really want to come to the stadium and we have to cheer the fans. We have to start winning and give them nice things. We need the fans with us. We are Barça and, despite losing Messi, we will have options.”

Goals from Memphis, Martin Braithwaite and Riqui Puig made it a good win for the hosts who must now prepare for a first La Liga game of the season against Real Sociedad in a week’s time.
