Aguero reveals why he didn’t want Messi’s No. 10 shirt
The striker was also shocked by his friend’s exit
Sergio Aguero has been talking about his decision not to take over the No. 10 shirt from close friend and Argentina teammate Lionel Messi.
The striker was one of the names in the frame to wear the iconic number after Messi’s shock departure from the Camp Nou this summer.
However, Aguero has said he was never tempted to wear the No. 10 and has taken time out to explain his decision.
“For me, Leo’s exit was also a shock. They offered me the 10 shirt and my teammates echoed: ‘Wear 10, wear 10! But it’s not about whether I wanted to wear it or not. It’s that I came here thinking: ‘I’m going to play with Leo and Leo is going to wear 10.’ When what happened happened, I wasn’t going to touch that shirt.
“More than anything because I’m very close to Leo. Maybe Messi would like me to wear the number 10 shirt, but it’s not about that, it’s about respecting him. I’m not going to play with the number 10. If they want other players to wear it, fine, no problem. It’s not mine!”

Barcelona has since confirmed that Ansu Fati is the club’s new No. 10. President Joan Laporta has revealed the teenager spoke with the Barcelona captains before switching numbers,
Meanwhile, Aguero will wear the No. 19 in 2021-22 but is still waiting to make his debut after picking up an injury in pre-season. The Argentine is expected back towards the end of October.
