Barcelona Femeni discover UCL group-stage opponents

The champions are in Group C

Barcelona Femeni have been drawn in Group C in the new-look 2021-22 UEFA Women’s Champions League and will take on Arsenal, Hoffenheim and newcomers HB Køge.

The Catalans will be out to defend their title after being crowned European champions for the first time last season after beating Chelsea in the final.

Here’s a look at the full draw:

Group A: Chelsea, Wolfsburg, Juventus, Servette FCCF.

Group B: Paris, Breidablik, Real Madrid, WFC Kharkiv.

Group C: Barcelona, Arsenal, Hoffenheim, HB Køge.

Group D: Bayern, Lyon, Häcken, SL Benfica.

Barcelona Femeni boss Jonatan Giráldez has offered his thoughts on the draw:

“For me, Arsenal is one of the teams that has strengthened the best in Europe. They have high-level players and the other day, against Chelsea, they showed it, with a very high pace of play.

“Hoffenheim eliminated Milan, we have already seen some of their games this season. On a defensive level they have a very strong structure. They competed in the League against Wolfsburg and Bayern and, despite being a debutant, it will be difficult.

“Barça’s aspiration is to win every game. We like this format, it’s a new way of facing this competition and the team is really looking forward to it.”

The games are due to be played between 5 October and 16 December. The top two in each group qualify for the quarter-finals which are scheduled for March 2022.
