‘Anything can happen in football’

Sergio Busquets is an interesting character in the Barcelona story. The legend is clearly in a different stage of his career yet just as important to the success of Barcelona as he was five years ago.

The Spaniard came out to talk this morning at Barca’s pre-match press conference about Lionel Messi’s exit and his team’s chances in Europe this year. First, he was asked about the GOAT’s departure.

“It was a shock, for everything that Leo gave to Barca and personally to me.

“It was an accumulation of emotions that were difficult to digest, but we have to try to change the story. We are at the beginning of the season and we’ll have to get used to playing without Leo.”

The midfielder was then asked about Barcelona’s chances in Europe without the Argentine legend.

“Anything can happen in football. Chelsea won the Champions League last season and were not favourites.

“The important thing is the collective level and we know that we do not have Leo or his individual qualities. We are here, excited and aware of the difficulty, but we have a lot of ambition and we want to win.”

Barcelona’s first group game is on Tuesday against Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou.
