The Barça transfer boss has addressed the rumors of the club trying to sign a new midfielder

We are a little over a month away from the January transfer window, which has suddenly become a crucial one for Barcelona as the club tries to deal with the loss of midfielder Gavi for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL and meniscus in his knee.

Naturally the rumor mill has linked the Blaugrana with a number of different midfield options, from Bruno Guimarães to Giovani Lo Celso and everyone else in between. Other reports seem to suggest Barça will trust the youth with Fermín López and Marc Casadó set to play increased roles for the first team, but the truth is we simply don’t know what Barça’s strategy will be as we approach January.

But we might have a clue from someone who actually makes the decisions: sporting director Deco, who was asked by EFE about the plans to replace Gavi in the market. His quotes are somewhat clear and definitive, but also might be open to some interpretation.

At face value it seems like Deco is saying Barça won’t sign any players, and they will stick with their current midfield options until the end of the season. But one can also read his quotes as him saying Barça can’t sign anyone as good as Gavi, however that doesn’t mean they definitely won’t sign anyone if the right opportunity is there.

Deco is right to play his cards close to the vest. Barça don’t have a lot of money to work with as it is, and they can’t appear desperate going into what is notoriously a difficult market in January where prices go up and teams usually don’t want to sell their players.

What do you think, Barça fans? Should Deco look for a replacement or stick with his current options?
