Barcelona confirm knee injury for Cancelo
The club have offered an update
Barcelona have offered an update on Joao Cancelo’s fitness after he was forced off early against Las Palmas on Thursday night.
Cancelo was replaced by Andreas Christensen after sustaining a knee injury. Barca have now confirmed it’s a ligament issue and that he’s sidelined for the time being.
Here’s the club’s official statement:
“Tests carried out on Friday show that first team player João Cancelo has a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. He is unavailable for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”
Early estimates suggest it’s not too serious an injury but that Cancelo could miss the rest oft the month because of the problem.
If those estimates are correct it means that Cancelo will miss Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup campaign in Saudi Arabia.
The team are due to fly out after Sunday’s Copa del Rey clash against Barbastro - a game Cancelo would surely have been rested for in in any case.
