Should Barcelona go for Joao Pedro or Lautaro Martinez instead of Julian Alvarez this summer?

Barcelona’s hunt for a new number nine has shifted toward London as the club looks to add some much-needed bite to Hansi Flick’s attack.

While the team is cruising toward a league title and already has the Supercopa in the bag, winning the UEFA Champions League remains a dream and it may require a clinical edge they still lack. Julián Álvarez is the dream signing, but his situation at Atlético Madrid is a financial headache that Barça might not be able to solve.

According to Cadena SER’s Què t’hi jugues, João Pedro has emerged as the alternative. The 24-year-old Brazilian fits the “Flick style.” He’s mobile, works hard off the ball, and isn’t a static target man. Chelsea’s chaotic sporting project and their looming need to sell to meet financial fair play rules might actually play into Barça’s hands, even though João Pedro’s 75 million euro market value is daunting.

He’s clearly a fighter, too. After returning from an injury to help Chelsea secure an FA Cup final spot this past weekend, João Pedro admitted he rushed his recovery because he hated watching from the sidelines. “I saw teammates suffer a bit … I tried to push to be able to play,” he said.

He helped grind out a win against Leeds United, putting in a good shift where he was congratulated by the press for his link up play, as they look toward a final against Manchester City.

If the Chelsea move proves too pricey, Lautaro Martínez remains the “old reliable” option on the table. The Argentine striker has been linked with a move away from Inter Milan and towards Camp Nou for what seems like forever. He’s 28 and brings more veteran savvy, though he’s struggled with a nagging injury since February. Lautaro and João Pedro have very similar stats this year, but the Brazilian’s age and versatility could make him a more intriguing long-term bet for a club trying to build a new era.
