The defender has gone under the knife in Finland

Barcelona have confirmed that Ronald Araujo has undergone successful hamstring surgery on Monday in Finland.

The defender was operated on by Dr Lasse Lempainen after sustaining the injury on international duty playing for Uruguay at the Copa America.

Here’s the club’s official statement:

“The first team player Ronald Araujo has undergone a successful medical procedure on his right hamstring tendon injury. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Lasse Lampainen, under the supervision of the Club’s medical services, in Turku, Finland.

“His return to competition will be decided by his recovery.”

As usual, there’s no deadline set for when Araujo is due to return. However, it’s been widely reported he will miss the next four months for Barcelona.

Araujo’s injury will be a big blow to new manager and Hansi Flick ahead of the start of the new La Liga season.

It remains to be seen how Flick will line his defence up without Araujo, but he does have plenty of options with Jules Kounde, Inigo Martinez, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi and Mikayil Faye expected to be in his squad for next season.
