The young defender made history with La Roja

Barcelona center-back Pau Cubarsí can call himself an Olympic champion at just 17 years old, finishing an incredible first season in professional football with the first gold medal for Spain in men’s football in 32 years and the first in any team sport since 1996.

Even though Fermín López has rightfully grabbed all the headlines with his performances in Paris, Cubarsí had an excellent tournament as well after a difficult first game and was an absolute rock in the final, showing off all of the skills that made him a Barcelona starter at such a young age.

Cubarsí spoke to the press after the game, and like any young kid achieving their dreams, he couldn’t quite believe what had just happened.

“The medal is very heavy, to be honest! It’s a sensational that can’t be described with words, it’s something spectacular and I hope every Spaniard is as happy as we are.

“I’m proud to have worked all of this time to achieve this. The work has been spectacular. We’ve achieved something historic and now we’re going to celebrate.”

The center-back also spoke about the madness that was the final itself, with a 5-3 win for Spain after 120 minutes of non-stop, back-and-forth action with huge chances for both sides and several twists and turns in one of the best, most entertaining football matches in the history of the Olympics.

“I’m sure that was spectacular for those watching. We went behind but managed to comeback, then France equalized and took it to extra-time, but we still did a spectacular job to go and win it at the end.”

Cubarsí also spoke about the club season ahead, and the defender is ready to join Hansi Flick’s squad right away and help Barça achieve their goals.

“I am a little tired right now but the season has just begun. I had a full vacation and was able to recover from last season. Now it’s time to join the team, and try to compete in every competition we play.”
