Mathaus: ‘We know Flick holds Kimmich in high regard’
The Bayern star’s future remains unclear
Lothar Mathaus has claimed Bayern Munich are well aware that Hansi Flick is a big fan of Joshua Kimmich as speculation continues over the Germany star’s future.
Kimmich is out of contract at the end of the season and there has been speculation he could move on, potentially to Barcelona.
Mathaus is hoping he will stay but knows that Flick would be keen if Kimmich did become available.
“Bayern have a great team, a great style of play and a great atmosphere. But maybe Kimmich wants to try something different. We know that at Barcelona there is a coach, Hansi Flick, who holds him in very high regard,” he told Abendzeitung.
“I think it would be a shame if he left Bayern. He is an exemplary professional and, together with Jamal Musiala, will be the face of the club in the future. Therefore, it would be a great loss if another top-level player, after David Alaba, left with the letter of freedom. His situation has changed with Vincent Kompany. We have to put the past behind us and try to reach an agreement.”
Talk of a move to Barcelona has gone quiet recently, particularly following the emergence of Marc Casado. The Catalans will also have Marc Bernal back next season, and it remains to be seen if they will go for Kimmich if he does decide to move on.
