Leganes captain reveals the key to keeping out Barca
The Catalans drew a blank on Sunday in La Liga
Leganes captain Sergio González has been talking about how his team kept out Barcelona after picking up a shock 1-0 win over Hansi Flick’s side.
The visitors scored early from a corner in a routine that Gonzalez admitted had been practised ahead of the game.
“We had rehearsed and it came off perfectly,” he told Cadena SER. “The players making the perfect block to get in wide at the near post.
“He [Oscar Rodriguez] puts in a spectacular ball, when I saw it in the air I knew 100% that it was going in.”
Barcelona did carve out plenty of chances but Gonzalez reveals how his team tried to keep the hosts out wide.
“We were following the second runs, and above all closing off a lot on the inside so that they could play from the outside, and there with the wide crosses, we felt very comfortable and I think that has been the key that they did not get through from the inside.”
Gonzalez also admitted that his team felt a lot happier when Robert Lewandowski was withdrawn in the second half.
“We in the low block felt more comfortable because we did not have to deal with a threat of that style as much.
“They have other players who are very skilled and we had to be very concentrated for any other type of actions.”
The win was Leganes’ first on the road this season in La Liga, while Barca suffered a fourth defeat of the season in the Spanish top flight.
