Barca were told not to sign Olmo by club’s own financial advisers
Registration problems were expected....
Barcelona were advised not to sign Dani Olmo this summer by the club’s financial advisors due to potential risks about registering the Spain star.
The Athletic are reporting that financial advisers analysed the transfer and “their recommendation was not to sign Olmo as they anticipated risks over his future registration.”
However, Barcelona went ahead with the signing anyway and have since had plenty of trouble when it comes to registering the player.
Olmo missed the start of the season as Barca tried to balance the books and only managed to register him until the end of 2024 after Andreas Christensen was ruled out for four months.
Barca were then hit with more problems at the start of the year which have been well documented. Olmo has been registered on a temporary basis but a final decision on the whole saga is yet to be made.
The report adds that Olmo “had concerns” before putting pen to paper and did discuss the issue with his Spain team-mates. He ended up asking for a clause to be put into his contract letting him leave for free if he was not registered.
Barcelona did end up accepting his request to change his contract and Olmo was told “there would be no issues for him to play in January.” Of course there were issues and Olmo was forced onto the sidelines once more until the CSD handed Barca a temporary measure.
There’s never been any suggestion Olmo would use the clause, which would be fairly disastrous for Barca if he did, but the saga continues to hang over the club and likely will do until a final decision is made by April at the latest.
