The forward has been left out of the squad for recent matches

The future of Ansu Fati is a subject of heavy speculation at Barcelona as the young forward has been left out of Hansi Flick’s squad for the last three matches, with the likes of Toni Fernández and Pau Víctor preferred to the 22-year-old.

Fati has consistently struggled with injury for the last four years and hasn’t been able to regain the form shown when he first played for Barça and looked like one of the best La Masia prospects we’ve ever seen, but it appears his future will be elsewhere, maybe as soon as the end of the January transfer window.

Hansi Flick was asked about Ansu in his Friday press conference, and the coach made it clear he’s been honest with the player about where he currently stands in the pecking order, and said that he’s given Fati the decision about whether to stay or leave the club this month.

“It’s very important to be honest with the players. I’ve been honest with Ansu. We talked about various options and now it’s his decision. If he wants to stay, that’s fine, he’s a La Masia player. This is professional football and performances count. My job is to help him improve and that’s what we want to do with all the players. Ansu is very professional and always focused. I want to help him.”

Ansu’s departure seems like a matter of when, not if. A few clubs around Europe are interested, including a couple in the Premier League, and it’s now up to Fati to accept the sad fact that his Barça career probably needs to end.
