Flick offers Iñigo and Olmo fitness update ahead of Alavés
The duo has been out injured
Barcelona wrapped up the first part of their European campaign this season in midweek and are now focused on domestic commitments over the next several weeks, starting with a La Liga clash against Alavés on Sunday afternoon at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium.
The Blaugrana have missed two of their key starters over the last few weeks as Iñigo Martínez hasn’t been available since suffering a hamstring injury in the Spanish Super Cup Final while Dani Olmo has been struggling with a calf issue, and coach Hansi Flick was asked in a press conference on Saturday about the availability of those two players.
Flick confirmed that Iñigo is indeed available again after completing multiple training sessions this week, but revealed that Olmo is not quite ready to come back yet despite already being out for more than the expected 10 days when his injury was first announced.
“It’s not easy for the players, but that’s the schedule, it’s set for everyone. We’re doing well. Iñigo is available again, Dani needs a bit more time.”
Having Iñigo back is crucial given Andreas Christensen is out again with a calf injury, while Dani’s case sounds more like precaution than anything else. If Barça were to play a truly crucial game in the next week or so, Olmo would probably find a way to be ready to go.
For now, though, it’s sensible to give him time to feel 100% so he’s available for the games that matter the most down the line.
