The German boss discussed the two midfielders

Barcelona’s midfield depth has been a strength of the team all season, and it will be severely tested over the next month thanks to injuries to Marc Casadó and Dani Olmo which will require others to step up.

Two players who did step up in their absence in the midweek win over Osasuna were Gavi and Fermín López, who were excellent in all aspects of the game and will likely play a big part over the next few weeks as Barça make a push in all competitions.

Hansi Flick was asked about both players in a press conference on Saturday, and he started by discussing what Gavi’s best position is and how much he impact the game with his ability to press and keep possession.

“His best position is a number 6 or number 8, but he can play in several positions. Against Osasuna, he played well to press the opponent, and we’ll see what we do tomorrow. I’m very happy with his performance as a number 6. He kept possession very well in the second half; he did a great job.”

As for Fermín, Flick was full of praise for his intensity and fighting spirit, and seemed to indicate the youngster will be given more minutes with the current absences in midfield.

“Every player is important. To start with, the level in training is very high, and we need the players to be at their best. The reaction after Lewandowski’s goal says everything about him. He’s a great fighter, a great kid. When he doesn’t play well sometimes, he gets a little sad, but we love him like this, smiling and giving his all for the team. Now he can show that in every game. I’m happy he’s here; it’s fantastic.”

Fermín’s role has certainly diminished with the arrival of Dani Olmo but he can now regain the form that made him a fan favorite last season and won Spain an Olympic Gold Medal last summer, and Gavi appears to be getting closer and closer to full fitness after such a long time away due to injury and is starting to show all of the qualities that make him a special midfielder.
