Flick offers update on Szczesny’s future amid contract extension talk

The goalkeeper has impressed and could stay for one more year
Wojciech Szczesny had to wait quite a while to replace Iñaki Peña as Barcelona’s number one goalkeeper due to Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury, but the Pole has certainly become the undisputed starter with his performances since being inserted into the lineup at the start of the new year.
Barça are yet to lose with Szczesny in goal, and the shot-stopper has been a key piece in making sure his team stays unbeaten with some very important saves in several games recently.
Szczesny has been so good in fact that there’s already talk about him sticking around for another year, and signing a contract extension to become Ter Stegen’s backup when the German returns from injury next season.
Hansi Flick was asked about Szczesny and if he wants to see him back for next season in a press conference on Saturday, and the coach made it clear he’s very happy with the goalkeeper’s performances but will leave his future at the club up to sporting director Deco.
“I haven’t offered anything to any player, it’s Deco’s job and the club’s job. We’re happy with him, but it’s Deco’s job. We’re happy with him, that’s all I can say.”
Flick certainly sounds like someone who wants Szczesny back next year, and it’ll be hard to find a large number of Barça fans who don’t want the same thing. Szczesny has been pretty good as the number one, and would be a great number two option next year as a proven, experienced backup who already knows the team and the system.
We don’t know if he came out of retirement for just this season or if he’ll be tempted to stay for one more year, but Szczesny would certainly be welcomed back if he wants to stay.
