Piqué defends himself: "I apologize to the assistant, but I didn't insult him"

Gerard Piqué is potentially looking at a hefty punishment from the Spanish Federation because of his insults to an assistant referee during the Spanish Supercup second leg against Athletic Bilbao, but he insists he did nothing wrong.

According to the referee's match report, the Barcelona center-back approached the linesman following a missed offside call and said "I sh*t on your whore mother", which led to his red card. Due to the gravity of the words, the LFP is doing further investigation that could lead to a four- to twelve-game suspension for Piqué due to insults to a match official.

But the Blaugrana star is defending himself from the accusations, and he took to Twitter to do so:

"I would like to apologize because my attitude when I approached the linesman wasn't correct. That was a very tense football match in which we were competing hard. However, I did not use in any moment any insulting words towards the assistant."

That defense is not that strong, by the way, but it's one that the player and the club are using. They can't use a stronger argument simply because the image is clear, and you can clearly see him saying those words. They're appealing the ban just to cause the LFP not to be too harsh, and give him the minimum sentence, which is a four-game ban.

Let's see how this develops.
