Five keys to FC Barcelona's 2–1 comeback victory at the Calderón
We take at look at the top five factors that led Luis Enrique's squad to the come-from-behind win
Under control. Barça put on a real show of force at the Calderon, dominating from start to finish with 68% possession, precision passing, and relentless defence. It was a grand performance in a tough place to play.
Mentality of a champion. To win at the Calderon, Luis Enrique's men had to overcome adversity — injuries on defence, a ball off the crossbar, two hand balls in the Atlético area, Vermaelen going down untouched, and a 1–0 second half deficit. Despite everything, Barça still took home the three points.
Tit for tat. The unexpected goal by Fernando Torres on 51 minutes failed to shake the team's determination. Far from getting nervous, the team has reacted immediately and equalised three minutes later with a stunning free kick from Neymar, thus keeping Atlético from playing with a lead.
Lionel Messi. A surprise reserve to start the game after missing training while playing for Argentina and becoming a father, Messi entered the pitch on the hour mark and was, quite literally, a game-changer. The number 10 spearheaded the Barça attack over the final half-hour and scored the game-winner.
Nine for nine. Three golden points at Vicente Calderón after an opening-game victory at San Mamés and a 1–0 win over Malaga in the first game at Camp Nou make Barça perfect with nine points in three games.
