A Fan’s Perspective: Andre Gomes looked good against Real Betis

Things are looking good for the Portuguese

A quick check of the transfer rumours from the past couple of weeks will reveal the kind of speculation that surrounded the future of Barcelona’s Andre Gomes.

Since his arrival from Valencia, Gomes has looked mediocre, to say the least. He struggled for form and has never truly found his place in the Barcelona squad. For instance, he is still remembered for his Champions League appearance against Manchester City under Luis Enrique but little else.

Things got to the point where there were rumours (albeit from unreliable sources) that Messi and Gomes didn’t get along. While the rumours themselves were ridiculous, it goes on to show how negative the narrative was around Gomes.

Times are turning for the better, however. Gomes has seen his playing time increase in recent weeks and it looks like Ernesto Valverde counts on him. This is excellent news for the midfielder who repaid the manager’s faith by putting on a solid showing against Real Betis. Gomes worked hard, retained possession, tracked back, and played some good passes in the final third.

While it would be premature to say that he is not on Barcelona’s potential out-going list, he certainly did enough to convince me that things could work out for him.

In a match where people are talking of Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergi Roberto and Ivan Rakitic, it seems like Gomes’ performance has slipped under the radar.

I just hope that Valverde noticed.
