During Bayern Munich Reign, Pep Guardiola Wanted Philippe Coutinho
Bayern Munich were not prepared to pay up, though
FC Barcelona’s newest signing, Philippe Coutinho, had been tracked by big clubs for a while. In fact, according to German journalist, Raphael Honigstein, current Manchester City and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola wanted him when he was the Bayern Munich boss.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5, Honigstein said, “when Pep Guardiola was at Bayern, Coutinho was the one player from the Premier League they really wanted to take.” However, the Bavarians did not get him because they knew they’d have to pay an outrageous transfer fee, one they were not prepared to spend.
The Brazilian had shown promise at Inter Milan and during his loan spell at Espanyol, but his ascendancy towards stardom did not truly begin until he joined Liverpool. That’s when Guardiola, among many, started pulling for him.
In the end, Barça were his destination - but it took a truly massive amount of money to complete the move.
