Jürgen Klopp Increased Ousmane Dembélé’s Price in Barcelona Transfer
The Liverpool coach may have cost Barça
Not only did Barcelona break their transfer record in signing Philippe Coutinho, paying €160 for the Brazilian, but this was after first breaking their record in the summer by paying €145 to Borussia Dortmund for Ousmane Dembélé.
And that high price for Dembélé may have partially been due to Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp, who used to coach Dortmund.
Speaking on the Football Weekly podcast, German journalist Raphael Honigstein revealed that according to Dortmund, Klopp told them to ask for a high fee for Dembélé, because he knew Barcelona had a lot of money, given their interest in Coutinho.
Honigstein said:
“[Dortmund] basically revealed that they really benefitted from Barcelona’s interest in Coutinho in the summer, because Jürgen Klopp passed on a message to Dortmund saying, ‘Don’t worry. We’re not going to sell. If Barcelona come to you for Dembélé, be assured they have a lot of money to spend on him, and ask for a lot of money for him.’”
But perhaps Barça had even more money than Klopp suspected, as they came for Coutinho afterwards anyway.
