Barcelona Could Virtually Secure La Liga With Atlético Madrid Loss
The title would be almost decided - almost.
FC Barcelona could virtually win a second title in two days, and once again, it would be at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid. That’s if Atlético Madrid lose today to Real Betis, which is far from impossible. That would eliminate Atlético from contention and all but confirm the title for Barcelona. There would still be one last faint hope for Real Madrid to claw the league from the Catalans, but that’s a remote possibility.
Betis are all the way up to fifth in the table following a fabulous six game winning streak, which makes them the hottest team in Spain at the moment. Atléti, meanwhile, have only won one of their last four.
Barcelona secured another Copa del Rey title yesterday with a 5-0 thumping of Sevilla, at Atlético’s home ground, the Wanda Metropolitano. And the Wanda will be where Betis will play Atlético today in less than an hour. If Betis win, Barcelona will be extremely close to mathematically sealing La Liga.
If that happens, and then, Real Madrid fail to win against Leganés, Barcelona would automatically win La Liga. In any case, Barcelona could secure La Liga with a win over Deportivo next week, the earliest Barça can themselves win the championship, regardless of other results.
Atlético, if they lose today, will have four games left, and on 71 points, it would be enough to possibly tie Barça’s 83 points. But Barcelona own the tiebreaker over los colchoneros, meaning the title would still go to the Catalans.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, have 68 points and five games left. Theoretically, if they win all five, they would also tie Barça’s 83 points. But since Real have not played Barcelona for a second time this league season, the tiebreaker is not decided. But Barça won the first Clásico this season 3-0, so Madrid would have to win by at least 3, and probably even 4, to have a chance. But even if Real Madrid won every remaining game and beat Barcelona 4-0, Barcelona would still be champions if they gained even a single point - for example, losing four games but drawing just one. That means today’s Atlético-Betis game would all but confirm the league title.
