Florentino Pérez on a Possible Clásico Final: ‘We Have Beaten Barcelona Twice This Season’
The Real Madrid president challenged their rivals
Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez has issued a challenge to FC Barcelona after being asked about the possibility of having a Clásico as the final to the UEFA Champions League.
“If we face Barça in the final,” Pérez said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, “I will remember that this year we have already beaten them twice by winning the European Supercup: 3-1 there and 2-0 here.”
Pérez was referencing two matches from way back in August of 2017. Although he’s got it wrong, it was not the European Supercup, but rather the Spanish Supercup. The European Supercup is a one-legged affair that Barcelona did not compete in this season.
He’s also failed to mention that, in their most recent meeting, Barcelona smashed Madrid 3-0 in December of last year.
“The important thing is to get to the final,” Pérez said, though he recognized that a Clásico final could be possible. He said he expects to meet Bayern Munich in the semifinal. The Germans currently have a 2-1 advantage in their tie with Sevilla.
While Perez was happy to speculate about the future, he finished his comment by saying “first, we must eliminate Juventus.”
Real Madrid currently have a 3-0 advantage going into the second leg of their tie with the Italian champions.
