Roma 3-0 Barcelona: Knocked out

Their treble dreams are over

Barcelona are OUT of the Champions League after a 3-0 defeat at Roma in the second leg of their quarter-final saw the tie finish 4-4 on aggregate with the Serie A side through on away goals.

FIRST HALF

Barcelona got off to the worst possible start when Edin Dzeko poked Roma in front after just six minutes. Daniele De Rossi was the creator and floated the ball in for Dzeko who beat Samuel Umtiti and poked it past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Roma continued to boss the first half against Barcelona who looked completely rattled by their intensity, high pressing and physical approach. Patrick Schick should have added a second and Ter Stegen saved well from Dzeko as Barca just about clung on.

The visitors offered practically nothing going forwards. Lionel Messi had a couple of free kick that he couldn’t get on target but otherwise the half-time whistle was a welcome relief.

SECOND HALF

It got even worse in the second half as Roma went 2-0 up after Gerard Pique conceded a penalty after fouling Dzeko. De Rossi stepped up and fired the penalty past Ter Stegen.

There was controversy shortly afterwards as Fazio, who had been booked in the first half for a horrible hack on Messi, fouled Andres Iniesta but somehow got away with a second yellow.

Roma continued to press and the chances kept coming. Ter Stegen saved from Nainggolan and El Shaarawy, De Rossi flashed a header wide and all Barca could muster was a bit of time-wasting and a shot from Messi straight at Alisson.

Another goal was coming and it arrived with eight minutes of normal time remaining as Manolas headed Under’s corner home to send Roma through on away goals and Barca out.
