Barcelona Prevail with Messi the GOAT

Throughout the game on Sunday, Sevilla showed exactly why they were a team that went into Old Trafford last year and beat Manchester United in the Champions League. They have a squad that is quick, at times clinical, and are a cohesive unit. Barcelona were pegged back for several periods throughout the game, but ultimately prevailed in the end. Lifting a trophy for the first time as captain, Lionel Messi became the Barcelona player with the most trophies ever, with 33, what a time to be alive.

Dembele Proves His Worth

With the signing of Malcolm, the inclusion of Coutinho, and the presence of Messi and Suarez in the squad, there have been rumors of a Dembele departure. Not yesterday though, Dembele proved exactly why so much was spent on the youngster and certainly put his best foot forward at the beginning of the campaign. With a rocket in the top right corner of the net, Dembele won the game for Barcelona - and his constant movement and attacking force proved to be decisive.

Arthur Shows Up

With the additional signings of Malcolm, Lenglet, and Arturo Vidal, some fans and pundits have forgotten about the little midfield maestro from Brazil. Arthur played another fantastic game, coming off a solid preseason with the team. Donning the legend Andres Iniesta’s #8, Arthur was a bright spot in the midfield, constantly asking for the ball and then moving it forward quickly. For such a young player with his talent, Barcelona may have snagged a world class midfielder for a small fee. Kudos.

Suarez Not There

The World Cup proved a great time for Luis Suarez, with his Uruguay team advancing to the last 8 and ultimately losing to winners France. The striker is now another year older this campaign and some of the signs of fatigue and age have begun to show. Suarez has notoriously started his Barcelona years slowly, so we hope that he finds the form and fitness to start making a difference more quickly this year.

Ter Stegen - Take a Bow

Last, but certainly not least, Barcelona’s goalkeeper deserves a large portion of the credit for the Supercopa win. Sevilla were given a questionable penalty and Ter Stegen proved why he is considered one of the best goalies in the world. Stopping Wissam Ben Yedder’s penalty proved decisive. With his ball playing skills and several other saves throughout the game, it seems Ter Stegen is ready for more of the footballing world to start acknowledging his greatness from game to game. The German proved the difference again, something that is becoming more common throughout the previous campaigns.
